Bonus Bet (Free Bet)

A promo wager funded by the bookmaker; on a win the bettor keeps the profit but usually not the staked amount.

A bonus bet, also called a free bet, is a sportsbook promotion in which the operator funds the stake at no cost to the bettor. If the bonus bet wins, the bettor collects the profit — the payout less the stake — but the original stake is not returned. This “stake not included” structure is the defining trait separating bonus bets from standard wagers and directly shapes how much they are truly worth.

Bonus bets rank among the most common promotional levers sportsbooks use to acquire and retain customers. They appear often within sign-up packages, deposit matches, and ongoing loyalty rewards. Because the stake is withheld on a win, a bonus bet’s real value sits below its face amount. A $100 bonus bet is not worth $100 — its expected value hinges on the odds it is placed at, and bettors extract the most value by deploying bonus bets on longer-priced selections.

Example

A sportsbook grants a bettor a $50 bonus bet within a welcome offer. The bettor places it on a selection at American odds of +200. On a win, the profit is figured on the $50 stake, returning $100 in profit. Unlike a regular $50 bet at +200, though, the bettor does not get the $50 stake back — only the $100 profit lands in the account. On a loss, the bettor risks nothing of their own, since the book supplied the stake. To maximize value, the bettor chose longer odds, which lifts the potential profit relative to the non-refundable stake.

Key Points

  • Stake not returned: A bonus bet’s defining feature is that the original stake is excluded from a winning payout. Only the profit portion credits to the account.
  • Best used at longer odds: Since the stake is forfeited either way, placing bonus bets at higher odds maximizes return relative to the bet’s actual value.
  • Common promotional tool: Bonus bets feature widely in sign-up bonuses, referral rewards, and ongoing promotions, ranking among the most frequent incentives at legal sportsbooks.
  • Subject to restrictions: Most carry conditions such as expiration dates, minimum-odds requirements, and market limits. Always check the terms before placing the wager.
  • Calculable value: A bonus bet’s expected value can be estimated mathematically from the chosen odds, helping bettors decide how to deploy these promotions.
