Key numbers are the victory margins that recur most often in a sport, which makes the spreads sitting on those margins especially important. In the NFL, the most common final margins are 3 and 7, since games are routinely settled by a field goal or a touchdown. A bettor who grasps key numbers sees that moving a spread from -2.5 to -3.5 matters far more than moving from -4.5 to -5.5, because far more games finish on exactly 3 points than on exactly 5.
Key numbers arise because each sport’s scoring structure forces natural clustering in final margins. In football, the 3-point field goal and 7-point touchdown (with the extra point) heap results onto those margins and their multiples. At -3, those games push (stake returned) instead of losing. That one half point around the key number 3 is worth far more than a half point in a 5 to 5.5 band, where far fewer games finish on that exact margin.
