Wagering Requirements (Rollover)
The multiple of a bonus or deposit that must be staked in total before any associated winnings can be withdrawn.
Wagering requirements, also termed rollover, define the cumulative stake a bettor must place before bonus funds or their attached winnings become withdrawable. Stated as a multiplier, the requirement sets how many times the bonus, the deposit, or a combination must be turned over. A 10x requirement on a $100 bonus, for instance, obligates $1,000 in total wagers before any bonus-derived winnings clear for cash-out.
The mechanism exists to stop bettors from claiming a bonus and withdrawing instantly. By forcing the promotional money through the book’s markets, it lets the operator extract revenue via the margin baked into each bet. Terms differ sharply: some offers apply the multiplier to the bonus alone, others to the bonus plus the qualifying deposit. Larger multipliers make funds slower and harder to unlock, so reading the exact conditions is essential before evaluating any promotion.
Example
A sportsbook posts a 50% deposit match up to $200 with a 5x requirement on the bonus amount only. The bettor deposits $400 and collects a $200 bonus. Clearing the requirement means staking $200 times 5, or $1,000 in total wagers. The bettor places ten $100 bets at -110 across the next week. Once $1,000 in wagering is complete, the requirement is satisfied and any remaining bonus balance plus those bets’ winnings become withdrawable. Had the 5x applied to deposit plus bonus ($400 + $200 = $600), the obligation would jump to $3,000 — a markedly steeper condition.
Key Points
- Read the multiplier carefully: A 1x rollover clears far more easily than a 10x rollover. The multiplier directly drives how much betting volume is needed before funds free up for withdrawal.
- Know what the multiplier applies to: Some requirements cover only the bonus; others cover the bonus plus the qualifying deposit. The latter produces a far larger total wagering burden.
- Time limits often apply: Most promotions set a deadline for completing the requirement. Missing it typically forfeits the bonus and any winnings tied to it.
- Not all bets may count equally: Some books weight bet types differently toward the requirement — straight bets may count at 100% while parlays count at a reduced rate, or the reverse. Check the terms for such restrictions.
- Impacts real value of bonuses: A large bonus saddled with a high requirement can deliver less actual value than a smaller bonus with low rollover, since the expected loss from the extra mandated wagering eats into the benefit.
