How to Use This Calculator
- Input your stake per part (total outlay equals 2× this figure)
- Input the win odds on your selection
- Set the number of places on offer
- Set the place fraction (1/4 or 1/5 of the odds)
- Read returns and profit across three cases: win, place-only, and unplaced
Formula
Total Stake = Unit Stake × 2 (one part for win, one for place)
Place Odds = (Win Decimal Odds - 1) / Fraction + 1
Win Return = (Stake × Win Odds) + (Stake × Place Odds)
Place Return = Stake × Place Odds
Win Profit = Win Return - Total Stake
Place Profit = Place Return - Total Stake
Frequently Asked Questions
Define an each-way bet.
An each-way bet bundles two stakes: a win bet plus a place bet. A winning selection settles both parts. A selection that places (finishes inside the top positions) without winning settles only the place part. Place returns are paid at a fraction of the win odds.
Meaning of 1/4 odds versus 1/5 odds?
This is the fraction of the win odds applied to the place return. Under 1/4 odds, the place part settles at a quarter of the win odds; under 1/5 odds, at a fifth. Example: win odds of 10/1 at 1/4 give place odds of 10/4 = 5/2.
How many places pay in each-way betting?
It varies by event. Horse racing usually pays 2-4 places, with more in handicap races. The bookmaker sets both the place count and the fraction per event.
Does each-way betting offer value?
Each-way can deliver strong value where a selection has a solid place chance at high win odds. Longshots with good place prospects make ideal each-way picks, particularly under generous place terms.
